Hogueras
This tradition comes from a time before Christmas itself and takes place on the 21st December.
It was originally a pagan ritual to mark The Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, and the arrival of winter.
Hogueras involves people jumping over lighted fires in the hope that it would protect them from illness
over the coming months which would have proved a difficult time for them
This fire-jumping can be seen mainly in Granada and Jaen.

La Misa De Gallo
This traditional church service takes place on Christmas Eve when family celebrations are interrupted at midnight by the ringing of church bells calling the people to the Mass of the Rooster –La Misa Del Gallo The service gets its name because it is said that the only time when a Rooster crowed at midnight was on the day that Jesus was born. One of the most beautiful services is held at the monastery of Montserrat, high in the mountain near Barcelona, the highlight of which is the amazing singing by the boys choir. |
